CALIFORNIA'S MID COAST

Impressions

Monterey aquarium, squirrels sunning themselves on the rocks, otter feeding time, telescope watching

Carmel, no Clint Eastwood, beach, quaint, surfers

Pacific Grove, Monarch butterflies

Point Lobos, barking of the sea wolves, guided tour

Big Sur, only waterfall into sea in entire contiguous 48 states, views over lunch and tea, lone beaches

Moss Landing, working harbor a la Cannery Row by John Steinbeck

Watsonville, artichoke capital of the world, giant artichoke models all over the place

We saw the spouts of gray whales, harbor seals, sea otters, sea lions, mule deer, humming birds, vultures, hawks, Monarch butterflies, various types of jays, wildflowers, Monterey pines and cypresses, coastal redwoods, palm trees

Weather was warm sunny and clear

no or very few people around

no traffic, lines or crowds

views along coastline breathtakingly beautiful.

CARMEL:

We transported ourselves to the beach, to be near the crashing waves, to crunch our feet in the sand. Watching the surfers spill, the dogs run in ecstasy, with sandy sticks in their mouths. And children, so excited, tumbling free, chasing birds. Those greedy seagulls -- eyeing my sandwich. This beach, it redefined "city park" here in Clint Eastwood's town. So neat, quaint, lined with correctly imaginative shops. No wastage here. Don't forget your "Raybans."

POINT LOBOS:

We heard a rolfing sea wolves' racket. There was the sea lion bash, on the exclusive rocks off shore. We worshipped their social scene and were blessed with the bobbing heads of curious harbor seals and ever rolling over otters. Ever in motion, the otters had so much fur to be scratched, combed and soaked. But there was more to see. The spouts of Gray Whales passing through, and on land several mule deer, oblivious to the thrill they were creating by their presence.
